President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has pointed out that, despite some shortcomings that certain minorities are selectively sharing with the world, there was so much more for the Maldives to be proud of. The President made this remark while speaking at the ceremony held today to inaugurate clean drinking water services in Mahibadhoo of South Ari Atoll.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President noted his Administration’s tireless efforts in bringing joy and betterment for the people. He said that the Administration’s goals resonate with the highest priority of the people, which is attaining development.
Continuing in this regard, President Yameen pointed out that the development projects carried out in the islands were not only funded by the State or with tax payer money. He said that international organisations like the UN often assist in accomplishing these projects in collaboration with the Government. The President also expressed his gratitude to the UN and UNDP for their continuous support and assistance to the Maldives.
Highlighting the fire incident that recently burnt down the Thinadhoo powerhouse, the President appealed for everyone to keep in mind the difficult circumstances and regret the whole community has to suffer at the cost of one individual’s actions. He said that damaging public service mechanisms shows that we are unappreciative of the aid provided by international organisations.
Continuing on, the President said that it was important that we demonstrate a good example of the kind of people we are, to those assisting the country’s development. He noted that the society cannot tolerate destroying institutions established for the development of the people. He further said that no individual had the right to harm the whole society’s image.
