President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has reassured the nation that there is no truth to the corruption accusations being made by a minority, in relation to the probe against the Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). The President reiterated his position while addressing the Maldivian people at the official opening of the Kudafari Harbour today.
In his speech, the President noted with regret the call by a minority of Maldivians for a tourism boycott and travel ban to the Maldives, further highlighting that it would be Maldivian citizens who would have to face the damaging consequences of such actions.
Speaking at the ceremony following the official opening of the Kudafari Harbour, President Yameen stated that the island’s harbour project was initiated in 2004, and interrupted on multiple occasions due to political influences. It is unacceptable that the people had to suffer the result of political differences, he said.
In his speech, the President highlighted his administration’s developmental schemes for the economic and social sectors and assured the people that by the end of his 5-year term, the Maldives will have transformed tremendously from its status prior to his assumption of office.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President stated that his administration’s goal was to build the nation, and revive the social ethics and discipline that have been lost over the years. He also underscored that the administration aims to provide the country’s youth with more opportunities, and ensure the protection of women’s rights. The President appealed to all citizens for their continuous cooperation and support in carrying these endeavours.
