President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has sent a message on the occasion of the official opening of the Embassy of Japan in the Maldives.

The President’s message reads as follows:‎

“On this historic occasion of the official opening of the Embassy of Japan in the Maldives, on behalf of the Government and the people of the Maldives, I have the honour to extend warm congratulations and sincere best wishes to His Imperial Majesty Emperor Akihito, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the Government and the friendly people of Japan.”

“It is indeed a very special day for Maldives-Japan relations. Ever since the establishment of formal diplomatic ties in 1967, the Maldives and Japan had enjoyed most cordial and friendly relations between the two countries. Our shared values of democracy, rule of law, human rights, human security and respect for fundamental freedoms give particular resonance to the friendship between our two countries. Over the years, Japan has always been at our side in times of triumph and tragedy, and has indeed proven to be a true and a trusted friend. There is no doubt that the opening of the Embassy today will help foster and develop these bonds further.”

“As we celebrate this very special occasion, I recall the fond memories of my official visit to Japan in April 2014. Although I did not get the chance to experience the cherry blossoms, the clean and crisp Tokyo breeze of the Japanese spring brought special meaning to my visit. It was not only my first official visit outside of the South Asia region in my capacity as the President, but it was also a visit that brought hope to our people. I am heartened to see that the agreements forged during my visit are finally starting to bear fruits.”

“On behalf of the Government and the people of the Maldives I take this opportunity to convey my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the Government and the people of Japan for the generous assistance and support extended to the Maldives over the years.”

“I look forward to working with Prime Minister Abe and the leadership of Japan to further strengthening of our relations at both bilateral and multilateral levels.”
