President Mohamed Nasheed this afternoon met the US Department’s Special Representative to Muslim Communities Ms Farah Pandith. The meeting was held at the President’s Office.

Discussions during the meeting were generally focused on social challenges faced by the Maldives and ways the Maldives and US could collaborate in addressing these challenges.

Noting the social transformations that were taking place in the Maldives, the President stressed the importance of civil society in addressing the issues that arose with the social and political changes. He sought US assistance to strengthen civil society organisations.

US Special Representative to Muslim Communities Ms Pandith underscored the importance of including the Maldives in the US government initiative to engage with Muslim communities around the world.

She also highlighted the importance of engagement and cooperation between the Maldives and US civil society organisations to increase capacity and effectiveness in addressing social issues in the Maldives.
