Father of First Lady Laila Ali, Mr Ali Abdulla has passed away, early this morning, at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. He was 69.

Late Mr Ali Abdulla had held many government posts. He served in the government as the Business Manager of Athiri Maafannuge and Maldivian Government Bodu Store. He also served as the Managing Director of the Maldives Ports Authority, and the Advisor on Commercial Ports for the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.

Late Mr Ali Abdulla was especially renowned for his contribution to modernise wood works and trade of carpentry in the Maldives. He had trained many Maldivians in furniture carpentry and construction, introducing them to many new carpentry and construction technologies.

He was awarded the National Award of Recognition in 1980 acknowledging his contribution to develop the trade of carpentry and wood works in the country.

Funeral prayers for Mr Ali Abdulla was held at Majid Sultan Mohamed Thakurfaan-al-Auzam after today’s Friday Prayer.

President Mohamed Nasheed and senior officials of the government attended his funeral this afternoon.

He is survived by three daughters and two sons.
