President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Saber Chowdhury has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The meeting was held on Monday morning, at the President’s Office.
At the meeting, President Yameen noted the importance of broadening the parliament’s role in overcoming the challenges faced in the country today. He also assured the IPU President of the Maldives’ support to the organisation, in carrying out their worldwide undertakings.
At today’s meeting, the IPU President conveyed Independence Day greetings to President Yameen. Highlighting the number of wide-ranging endeavours taken on by the organization, the IPU President noted that the organization accorded high priority to the issues of global climate change, human rights, and strengthening the universal legislative system.
Further, President Yameen and the IPU President noted the need for SAARC countries to come together and work towards their development through SAARC parliamentarian working groups.
The President was accompanied at the meeting by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dhunya Maumoon, Minister at the President’s Office, Hon. Mohamed Hussain Shareef, and State Minister at the President’s Office, Uz. Mohamed Mujthaz. Also in attendance at the meeting were Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Hon. Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed, Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Hon. Moosa Manik, and Secretary General of the People’s Majlis, Uz. Ahmed Mohamed.
