President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim have met the senior citizens of the country. The function was held on Sunday evening.
The President said that Maldivians will always treasure the invaluable services of our senior citizens. He stated that the senior citizens, who serve the country with integrity and exemplary discipline, were those who bridged the social gap between the youth and seniors.
Speaking at the function, the President said that the most important asset of a country was its independence, and noted that the UN’s core principle was to guarantee every individual his right to self-declaration and decision making.
In his speech, the President said that the hospitable and affectionate demeanour of Maldivian people demonstrated the peaceful conduct preferred by them. He said that the Government was working on reviving the customs being lost in the Maldives, and restoring the harmonious, peaceful way of life we lived in the past. He also sadly pointed out that there was a minority of Maldivian people who invited foreign influence into our domestic affairs.
