President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that, upon conclusion of his State Visit to Pakistan, he foresees ties between the two countries being elevated to a higher plane. The President made this remark while speaking to the media at the Pakistani Prime Minister’s Office, following the Official Talks held between the two countries. The meeting led by President Yameen and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was held earlier this afternoon.
President Yameen expressed confidence that the shared values and between the two countries, and commitment to enhancing regional cooperation would ensure even closer fraternal relations between Pakistan and the Maldives.
Speaking to the media, President Yameen said that time and time again Pakistan has proven itself to be a loyal friend to the Maldives in times of triumph and tragedy. Continuing in this line, the President said that Pakistan’s response to the Maldives’ appeals for support and assistance in the recovery efforts, during the aftereffects of the Asian Tsunami ten years ago, was overwhelming and greatly appreciated.
In his statement, President Yameen described both the one-to-one meeting held with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the Official Talks beld between the two Governments as 'fruitful' interventions. In this regard, President Yameen noted that the two countries has signed a number of important agreements, on health, education and sports cooperation, and strengthening mechanisms to combat illicit drug trafficking and narcotics abuse.
In his statement, President Yameen thanked Prime Minister Sharif and his Government for inviting him to conduct a visit to Pakistan, while extending an invitation to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to visit the Maldives to join the festivities of the Golden Jubilee independence celebrations during the year.
