Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Abdulla Yameen ‎‎Abdul Gayoom has said that Maldivian Security Forces has an obligation ‎and a duty to defend the Government and uphold the rule of law. The ‎President made this remark while speaking at the function ‎held this evening, ‎to mark the 123rd anniversary of the Maldives National ‎Defence Force ‎‎(MNDF).‎ ‎

Speaking in this regard, President Yameen said that the foremost duty of ‎every Maldivian and member of the security forces should be to preserve ‎peace, safeguard the Islamic faith, and maintain the sovereignty of the State. ‎

Underscoring that the Maldives has always been an independent nation, ‎‎‎President Yameen said that the Maldives was party to a number of ‎international conventions ‎and resolutions that emphasized the primacy of ‎State sovereignty. ‎ Continuing in this regard, the President called upon all ‎states to respect this principle of state sovereignty and maintain cordial ‎diplomatic relations, while affording the Maldives the same rights as larger ‎member states, as guaranteed in the various international conventions and ‎resolutions. Further, the President stated that the Government did not have ‎to yeild to the opionions and demands of outside forces in implementing the ‎verdicts issued by the Courts in Maldives. ‎

Underscoring the important national duty of the armed forces in protecting ‎the country from enemies of the state, President Yameen conveyed his ‎heartfelt appreciation to the MNDF officials and their families for their ‎invaluable service to the country. ‎

At today’s function, President Yameen launched the MNDF handbook. At ‎‎the function, the President presented tokens of appreciation to ‎‎‎Organisations and Members of the Public for ‎their ‎assistance and support ‎‎for the MNDF during the past ‎year.‎ He also presented certificates and ‎‎commemorative plaques to different units of MNDF for their services.‎

The President was accompanied at the event by ‎First Lady Madam ‎Fathimath Ibrahim.‎
