Noting that this year marked the 50th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that this national milestone did not only belong to the Government, but that it must be celebrated by all Maldivians. The President made these remarks while speaking at the 50th anniversary function of Alia Investments Pvt Ltd, one of Maldives’ leading businesses. He said that it was up to the people to colorfully celebrate the Golden Jubilee of independence on the Government’s initiative. The President also assured that all business corporations were welcome to carry out any special projects in the spirit of the Golden Jubilee year.

In his speech, the President said that Maldivian entrepreneurs must have the drive and desire to transform the country to a more livable and loveable place. He said that the country belonged to its people and not to the Government. He also noted that it was the people who were responsible to improve the living standards of the country or to depress it.

Speaking in this regard, the President stated that the Government’s policies were not sufficient to bring about these changes, and that the people should command the determination and willingness to carry the country forward. He also underscored that the Government would need the people’s support to reach its goals.

Speaking at tonight’s event, President Yameen appealed to the leading business corporations in the Maldives to give back to the community in some way. In this regard, the President highlighted the importance of corporate social responsibility, and ways businesses could contribute to the overall social wellbeing of the country.

At the function held this evening, Alia Investments Pvt Ltd presented President Yameen with a commemorative plaque.
