President Abdulla Yameen has assured the People’s Majlis that the Government would always work to protect and adhere to the Maldives’ Constitution and uphold its powers. He made these remarks in his Presidential Address for 2015, delivered before the People’s Majlis this morning.

The President further assured members of the Majlis and the people of Maldives that he would work to uphold the Constitution and laws of the nation at all times. He said that the Government would not hesitate to take all necessary measures to guarantee the safety and security of the people.

Continuing on, President Yameen said that the Government was working to ensure that the Maldives remained a thriving peaceful nation. He reiterated that the Government placed high importance to ensure that the people of this nation lead more fulfilling lives, and that national harmony, peace and upholding the law were crucial in achieving this vision.

In his Presidential address, the President highlighted the Government’s plans to resolve the challenges being faced by the people, and to achieve the country’s urban development goals. The President shared with the Majlis, the important milestones achieved last year, in the areas of fisheries, agriculture, education, health, sports, and social welfare of the country.

Further, President Yameen noted the increase in foreign investments secured in the year 2014, and the successful measures taken by the Government to alleviate the problems faced by the country’s economy. He also underscored the achievements the country has made with regard to foreign relations. Stating that tourism was the most important industry in the Maldivian economy, the President said that the Government was committed to developing tourism in the most beneficial and sustainable manner.

In his Presidential Address, the President especially noted the Government’s projects designed to fulfill its pledge for youth empowerment. He said that the loan scheme for young entrepreneurs “Getset” has now been introduced and will commence soon. He also said that a special Bill has been drafted to ensure rights of youth, and will be submitted to the Majlis this year.

Noting that this year marked the 50th anniversary of the Maldives’ Independence, the President said that the Government was working to conduct several colourful activities to celebrate the occasion. He said that it was important that all Maldivians participated in celebrating this important national milestone, and appealed to all Maldivians to participate in these activities, collaborate with the Government and make our golden jubilee a truly memorable occasion.
