President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has on inaugurated the ‎second phase of Hulhumale’ land reclamation project. The inauguration ‎ceremony was held on Thursday evening at Raalhugandu.‎

Speaking at the ceremony, President Yameen underscored the ‎Government vision to build a youth city in Hulhumale’, and stated that the island would fulfill the aspirations of the Maldivian youth.‎

Noting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the country’s ‎independence, President Yameen underscored the Government bid to ‎celebrate it as the year of the youth. In this regard, the President said that ‎the Government will accord a high priority to combat drug abuse, and to ‎reduce drug related crimes. Within this context, the President announced the ‎Government plan to establish a drug rehabilitation center in Hulhumale. ‎

Noting the difficulties faced by the Government in fostering ‎development of smaller islands, President Yameen highlighted the limited ‎opportunities available for youth living in such islands. Continuing on, the ‎President assured the youth of better living conditions and job ‎opportunities in Hulhumale’, and therefore urged the youth to migrate to ‎Hulhumale’.‎

The President asserted that Hulhumale’, upon completion of the ‎development of the second phase, would host an estimated population of ‎‎200,000 people. In this regard, the President highlighted the ongoing efforts ‎of the Government to strengthen the existing ferry system between Male’ ‎and Hulhumale’. The President also noted that the Male’-Hulhumale’ ‎bridge project would commence this year.‎
