President Mohamed Nasheed has this afternoon met with Ambassador of Germany to the Maldives Mr Jens Plötner. Members of the appraisal mission of German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) to the Maldives also accompanied Ambassador Plötner at the meeting held at the President’s Office.

Purpose of the GTZ mission to the Maldives is to advise the German government on formulating a joint environmental project of the Maldives and Germany.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Plötner said the German government had great empathy for the government of the Maldives and GTZ mission was a show of Germany’s confidence in the Maldivian government.

He also said the German government had been closely following the current political situation and developmental progress of the Maldives.

At the meeting, President Nasheed discussed with the Ambassador and the members of GTZ mission, possible areas in which Germany could assist and support the Maldives.

In this regard, the President said low carbon development was possible and thanked the German government for its commitment to the Maldives’ low carbon development strategy.

Members of the GTZ mission briefed the President on the progress of their work in the Maldives and said the objective of the mission was to determine how they could create an administrative framework to enable the implementation of low carbon development projects.

GTZ is a federally owned organisation mandated to support the German government in achieving its development objectives. The organisation works worldwide in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development.
