President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has today laid the ‎foundation stone of the 704 housing units to be constructed in Hulhumale. ‎This project is part of the Government’s 1500 housing initiative to be built ‎under an agreement between the Maldivian Government and the ‎Government of China.‎

Speaking at the ceremony, President Yameen underlined the ‎Government’s vision to build a Youth City in ‎Hulhumale’, and stated ‎that ‎the rapidly developing island represents the hopes and dreams of the ‎Maldivian youth. Continuing on, the President said that the project will ‎mitigate the housing shortage faced by young Maldivians. ‎

President Yameen asserted that the Male’- Hulhumale bridge ‎project was not solely driven by economic objectives, but seeks to ensure ‎the provision of basic services to the public. The President further stated ‎that President Xi Jinping of China has expressed the Chinese Government’s ‎interest in further looking into supporting this initiative.


In his speech, President Yameen highlighted that the reclamation ‎of Hulhumale was a forward-looking project, first initiated by President ‎Maumoon. On behalf of the Maldivian people and on his own behalf, the ‎President expressed his gratitude to President Maumoon for his immense ‎socio-economic contributions during his presidency. ‎

President Yameen also extended his sincere appreciation to the ‎China Machinery Engineering Corporation (C.M.E.C) and the Chinese ‎Government for supporting the construction of housing units in Hulhumale. ‎
