President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has this morning met ‎with the President of China Machinery Engineering Corporation, Mr. Zhang ‎Chun.‎

At the meeting held at the President’s Office, discussions were ‎focused on the investment opportunities available in the Maldives. In this ‎regard, President Yameen shared with Mr. Zheng, potential areas of ‎investment in the Maldives, in the fields of commerce, housing, tourism and ‎power generation. ‎

Highlighting that the foundation-laying ceremony of the 1,500 ‎housing units project to be undertaken by the company would be held later ‎this afternoon, President Yameen thanked CMEC and the Government of ‎China for facilitating the project. President Yameen also expressed his ‎gratitude for the Government of China, for promptly responding to his ‎appeals for assistance during the Male’ water crisis. In this regard, the ‎President especially noted that the first shipment of water assistance that ‎arrived from China was sponsored by CMEC. ‎

Underscoring that creating job opportunities for the nation’s ‎youth, and providing affordable housing remains a key priority for the ‎Government, President Yameen briefed Mr. Zhang on the Government’s ‎vision to build a ‘Youth City’ in Hulhumale’. Continuing on, the President ‎stressed that the Youth City will encourage urban development, provide ‎employment, housing, and also recreational opportunities for the nation’s ‎youth.‎

At the meeting, President Zhang expressed his appreciation for the ‎support and cooperation received from the Government of Maldives in ‎undertaking the housing development project. ‎
