President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has on Wednesday met with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, during his visit to Nepal to attend the 18th SAARC Summit.
Underscoring the long standing fraternal relations between the two countries, President Yameen expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Sharif for Pakistan’s continued support and assistance to the Maldives. In this regard, President Yameen and Prime Minister Sharif also explored avenues to further expand the close favourable relations between the Maldives and Pakistan, especially in areas of trade, commerce, and human resources. They also exchanged views on making SAARC a more powerful regional bloc.
At the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif congratulated President Yameen on his victory in the 2013 presidential elections. Noting the historical relations between the two countries, Prime Minister Sharif further expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to him by former President Maumoon, during his visit to Maldives in 1998 to inaugurate the Parliament building.
