The new Secretary General of SAARC, Mr. Arjun Bahadur Thapa has called on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
At the meeting held at the President's Office on Thursday morning, President Yameen congratulated Mr. Thapa on his assumption of office as the new Secretary General of SAARC, and welcomed him to the Maldives. The President also underscored the importance Maldives attaches to the development of SAARC.
Highlighting the important role SAARC continues to play in promoting regional cooperation, President Yameen and Secretary General Thapa exchanged views on making SAARC a more dynamic association, by enhancing the role of SAARC through greater cooperation among the member-countries.
President Yameen was joined at the call by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dunya Maumoon and Foreign Secretary, Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed. Secretary General Thapa was joined at the call by the Maldives’ Regional Director at the SAARC Secretariat, Ms. Fathimath Najwa.
