President Mohamed Nasheed has today ratified the bill on the Prohibition of Gang Related Crimes.
Following ratification, the bill has been published in the Government Gazette.
The Gang Related Crimes Act prohibits the creation of gangs or groups to perform criminal activities. The Act also specifies penalties for gang related crimes. The Act also provides measures to protect witnesses in gang related crimes.
Under the Act, a person convicted of a gang related crime can be eligible for parole or clemency only after the offender serves 1/3 of the full sentence.
