President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has sent a message of sympathy to President Xi Jinping of China, following the terrorist attack in a market in Urumqi, China.

The President’s message reads as follows:

“It is with deep shock and sorrow that the Government and the people of the Maldives and I learnt about the heinous attack in a market in the northwest Chinese city of Urumqi, causing tragic loss of innocent lives and grievous injury to many. The Government and the people of the Maldives condemn in the strongest terms this cowardly act, and we express our firm solidarity with the People’s Republic of China in all its efforts to maintain peace and harmony.”

“The Maldives stands firm in its commitment to the fight against the global menace of terrorism, and will continue to work closely with the People’s Republic of China and the international community as a whole in eliminating the scourge of terrorism.”

“On this sad occasion of national grief, the government and the people of the Maldives and I pledge our full support and extend our deepest sympathy to you, the Government and the people of China, especially to those who were directly affected by the attack. Please also convey our sincere condolences to the members of the bereaved families.”
