President Mohamed Nasheed has today appointed three members to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives.

The People’s Majlis approved the three names last week. They are Ms Mariyam Azra Ahmed, Ms Jeehan Mahmood and Mr Ahmed Tholal.

The members took their oath of office at a ceremony held this morning at the President’s Office. The oath was administered by Supreme Court Judge Abdulla Areef.

Addressing the Commission members after the appointment, President Nasheed noted that the current Constitution fully protects fundamental human rights, and urged them to fulfil their duties in promoting and protecting those rights.

The President reiterated past human rights abuses must be investigated so that some form of transitional justice is delivered.
