President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has sent a message of sympathy ‎to President M.D. Abdul Hamid of Bangladesh, following the sinking of a ‎ferry boat in Meghna River.‎

The President’s message read as follows;‎

“It is with sorrow and dismay that I learnt of the tragic incident of a ‎passenger ferry capsizing in the Meghna River, causing the loss of many ‎innocent lives and injury to hundreds of people. While the search for ‎survivors continues, we pray that, of those that remain unaccounted for so ‎far, more victims can be saved.”‎

“At this time of tragedy, the Government and the people of the Maldives join ‎me in conveying our profound sympathy to Your Excellency, the ‎Government and the brotherly people of Bangladesh, particularly the families ‎of the bereaved, and offer prayers to those who have been injured in this ‎catastrophe. I wish the recovery efforts every success and commend the ‎tenacity of the Bangladeshi people in the face of such tragedy.”‎

“I am confident that with the characteristic courage and fortitude of your ‎people, they will be able to find the solace to overcome their sorrow. The ‎Government and the people of the Maldives stand in solidarity with you, and ‎the people of Bangladesh, in coming to terms with this tragedy.”‎
