In his weekly radio address, President Mohamed Nasheed has said there can be no development without justice and called for everyone’s effort to strengthen the justice system in the country.

“If there is no justice in a country, there can be no development or peace. It is everyone’s responsibility to do whatever possible to ensure justice,” the President said.

The President said he was confident the permanent Supreme Court had the competency to deliver justice in the country, adding he was hopeful the work of the Judicial Service Commission would also improve.

The President appointed the country’s first permanent Supreme Court on Tuesday after the interim Supreme Court’s mandate ended on 7 August, leaving the country into a legal limbo.

The President attributed the successful establishment of the Supreme Court to the joint efforts and cooperation by the Opposition DRP and the Maldivian Democratic Party in approving the necessary legislation and the Supreme Court bench.

He thanked the DRP leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali and all party members for their cooperation, and thanked the MDP parliamentary group, its leader Moosa Manik and all members for the “huge compromises” to make the permanent Supreme Court a reality.

In his weekly radio address, President Nasheed highlighted the flood disaster in neighbouring Pakistan, where millions of people have been affected.

Earlier, the President also sent a message of condolence to his Pakistani counterpart President Asif Ali Zardari.

The President urged everyone to provide assistance and aid to Pakistan in whatever way possible.
