President Mohamed Nasheed has today appointed Ahmed Faiz as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and appointed five others as Judges of the Supreme Court.

The People’s Majlis approved the new Supreme Court bench nominated by President Nasheed on Tuesday evening.

The Judges appointed to the Supreme Court today are Abdulla Areef, Ali Hameed Mohamed, Adam Mohamed Abdulla, Abdulla Saeed and Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi.

Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, who was also approved by the Majlis for the Supreme Court bench, was not sworn in today as he was not in the country.

Following the appointment, President Nasheed told the Chief Justice and Judges:

I nominated your names to the People’s Majlis as I believe you are most fitting to uphold justice in the country at this point in time.

The President thanked the parliament for their cooperation in approving the Supreme Court judges.
