President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has officially opened the Coast Guard Harbour and mosque, at the north Thilafalhu.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President said that providing housing for all military and police personnel, by the end of his 5-year term, was one of the most prioritized goals of the Government. He said that housing issues was one of the main challenges faced by those in the military and Police force.
At the ceremony held at the North Thilafalhu this morning, the President noted the role of the military and police force, at every time of major distress faced by the people. He said that every Maldivian was obligated to recognize the services of the military force.
Highlighting the contributions made to the North Thilafalhu by various individuals and organizations, the President praised the work put in by the Maldives National Defense Force. He reiterated that the Government would make every effort to complete the project soon.
In his speech, the President noted that the military’s discipline should be strengthened even more. He said that the military was disciplined, shaped and trained in a certain way, and that they were those in the front lines in the defense of the country and its people, and that it was unacceptable that retiring from the military service was a reason to change this ambition or this discipline.
The President expressed hopes to maintain the state of harmony within the military force. He said that in such a small country as the Maldives, those in uniforms must not be affected regardless of the political turmoil the country was in, or being surrounded by people of different political affiliations. He said that the military was people who were, and people who enforced discipline. Further, President Yameen said that the military was about being steadfast upon this discipline, and carryout the duties entrusted upon them.
Noting that the military service and their role was increasing every day, the President said that apart from the duties stated in the constitution, today we can see the spirit of providing different services to the Maldivian people and the Maldivian society, within the military forces.
