President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has appealed to the deans and lecturers of the Maldives National University (MNU) to determine ways to inculcate more interest in applied sciences among the students. The President made this appeal while speaking at the graduation ceremony of MNU this evening.
At the ceremony held at Dharubaaruge, the President underlined the minority of students who pursued a course in applied sciences, and pointed out that the unavailability of enough job opportunities in the field was likely a factor. However, he stressed that for a country to advance itself, applied sciences must be grasped.
In his speech, the President stated that the university years were the most joyful days in a student’s life, as well as being the time of their lives that must be most responsibly spent. He said that fresh graduates coming out from under the shade of the university and getting in to the work environment were bound to face multiple disappointments. The President advised the students to be persevere and relentless in working towards their goals. He further noted that having to face failure in their careers would possibly lead to hopelessness and loss of self-confidence. The President emphasised that having one’s self-confidence was the most important lesson in life.
In his speech, President Yameen highlighted the need to facilitate job opportunities for the increasing youth population. He said that one would be able to secure employment only if they possessed a marketable skill, or a good educational qualification. The President also said that this being one of the biggest challenges in the country today, must be deliberated within the University domain, and solutions reached.
Further, the President spoke on the importance of teaching the current status of the country at the university, noting that it did not mean politicizing the students.
