Acting Resident Coordinator of the UN, Mr. David McLachlan-Karr has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The meeting was held this morning at the President’s Office.

At the meeting, President Yameen highlighted the Government’s top priorities. In this regard, the President noted that economy was about empowerment, and briefed the UN Resident Coordinator on the efforts of the Maldives’ Government in empowering youth.

The Acting UN Resident Coordinator said that the UN did not impose a particular development agenda on a country, but supported the country’s developmental aspirations and provided assistance. Speaking in this regard, Mr. McLachlan-Karr briefed the President on the UN’s 5-year development assistance framework. He said that at the moment, UN’s focus was on resolving the environmental and bureaucratic issues being faced in the Maldives. He also shared with the President, the UN’s Green Tourism project planned for the Maldives.

The Acting UN Resident Coordinator further congratulated the President, on the Maldives’ reelection to the United Nations Human Rights Council. He applauded the Government for the peaceful and smooth conduct of the recent local council election process. He also welcomed the Government’s efforts to strengthen the local governance system in the Maldives.
