British High Commissioner to the Maldives, His Excellency John Rankin has paid a courtesy call on President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The meeting was held this morning at the President’s Office.
At the meeting, President Yameen and High Commissioner Rankin discussed Maldives-UK bilateral relations and exchanged views on ways to further enhance cooperation between the two countries.
Noting that economic transformation was on top of his Government’s agenda, President Yameen briefed High Commissioner Rankin on government strategies to improve the country’s current economic situation. He also informed the High Commissioner about the prospective projects for investments in the Maldives.
President Yameen also briefed High Commissioner Rankin on the need to impress upon the EU the pertinence of extending GSP Plus facilities to the Maldives for a further period, to ensure that the country’s fishery exports could remain competitive in European markets.
High Commissioner Rankin informed the President of the British government’s commitment to working with the Maldives on issues of mutual interest. He noted a number of initiatives of the British government in recent collaborative efforts with the Maldives. He inquired about possible areas in which Britain could support the Maldives’ developmental efforts in the time ahead.
At today’s meeting, the President and High Commissioner also discussed the current political situation of the country and on the need to maintain the prevalent peace and harmony in the time ahead.
President Yameen was joined at the call by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Dunya Maumoon, Minister at the President’s Office, Hon. Mohamed Hussain Shareef, and Ms. Farzana Zahir, Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
