President Mohamed Nasheed has ratified the Local Council bill which was passed by the People’s Majlis on 12 July 2010.
Following ratification, the bill has been published in the Government Gazette.
The Act specifies the election of members to Atoll Councils, City Councils and Island Councils.
The bill was originally returned to parliament by the President, because the bill could potentially deny many citizens the right to vote.
However, the Act now allows all eligible Maldivians to vote in locals elections from anywhere in the country and also from outside the country.
