President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Madam Fathimath Ibrahim have arrived this evening, on conclusion of their state visit to India. The President’s visit was made on the invitation of Indian President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee.

Speaking to the local media on arrival at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, the President said that his visit to India has been very rewarding to the Maldivian people, and that the Indian government had been very receptive in resolving all the issues discussed.

Continuing in this regard, the President highlighted the generosity of the Indian government in easing the difficulties faced by Maldives in importing petroleum and staple food items. President Yameen especially noted the India’s willingness to relax visa restrictions for Maldivians.

The President further said that during his trip, discussions were held on matters of interest to both countries. He also informed of his invitation to the Indian President, Vice President and the Indian Prime Minister to make an official visit to the Maldives at a time of convenience. The President expressed his gratitude to the government of India for his successful visit.

President Yameen also took some questions from the media, and highlighted the main issues discussed during his trip.
