President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the main purpose of his visit to India was to further strengthen the existing ties between the two countries. The President made this statement while speaking to the local media at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport this morning, prior to his departure on a state visit to India. The President’s visit is being made on the invitation of the President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee.

Meeting the media, the President highlighted India’s prompt response at every time of national distress, and how India has always been a loyal friend to the Maldives. He also noted that India was the most able country in the region to provide immediate assistance to the Maldives, in terms of its resources and financial capability.

In his press statement, the President highlighted that the foreign policy of the Maldives would be formulated with high regards to the efforts being made towards strengthening relations with neighboring countries, protecting the country’s independence, sovereignty, and Islamic faith. He said that the Maldives’ developmental goals would also be given great importance in formulating the foreign policy.

The President further said that a special department in every Maldivian embassy would cater to resolve the issues being faced by Maldivians, as part of the foreign policy.
