The Government of Japan has extended an invitation to President Yameen Abdul Gayoom, to conduct an Official Visit to the country. The invitation was made during a courtesy call on the President by the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, His Excellency Nobuhito Hobo.

Accepting the invitation and conveying his appreciation to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, President Yameen expressed confidence that his visit would further expand the close ties between the two countries. During his visit the President will meet with Emperor Akihito, Prime Minister Abe and other senior official of the Japanese Government.

President Yameen’s visit would be the first Official Visit to Japan by a Maldivian Head of State. While Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom made three official visits to Japan – in February 1989 to attend the funeral of late Emperor Hirohito, in November 1990 to attend the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Akihito, and in September 2001 to attend the WTO Millennium Conference of Tourism Leaders, President Yameen’s visit will be the first Official Visit on the invitation of the Japanese Government.
