In a condolence message to South African President Jacob Zuma following the passing of former President Nelson Mandela, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has described the late Nelson Mandela as a source of unrivalled inspiration for recent generations.

In his message, President Yameen has said that Mandela’s patriotism was evident in his pursuit of a free South Africa. Noting that South Africans have lost the nation’s father, and the world a revered statesman, following Mandela’s passing, the President has said that Mandela’s life and message of courage and goodness would continue to inspire and guide all of us around the world in the years ahead.

In his message to the South African President, President Yameen has said that Madiba was indeed the wisest leader of recent times, and that he would be missed dearly and remembered fondly.

President Yameen has said:

“President Mandela’s long walk to freedom does not end with his passing away. His vision of a South Africa of prosperity, peace and harmony is shared by all who loved, respected and admired him. The Maldives stands shoulder to shoulder with South Africa in the true and comprehensive realization of Madiba’s dream. I am keen, therefore, to further enhance our ties of friendship and cooperation on the global stage.”

The President concluded his message by extending heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the Government and the people of the Maldives, and on his own behalf, at this time of global sorrow, national mourning in South Africa, and personal bereavement for the Mandela family.
