President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom this morning urged his Cabinet of Ministers to work as a team, for effective delivery of public services, in line with the Government’s manifesto.

Presiding over the very first Meeting of his Cabinet, President Yameen said that, while the manifesto is needs-based, the top priority areas would be economic transformation and youth employment, and that tackling social issues would also feature high on his agenda.

Furthermore, the President informed the Cabinet that an Economic and Youth Division and a Social Division had now been established at the President’s Office, and that he and Vice President Jameel would oversee the new Divisions, respectively.

Highlighting the importance of earning the trust and confidence of the people, the President appealed to the Cabinet for timely implementation of government decisions.

In his remarks to the Cabinet, President Yameen noted that this administration was a coalition government and that the strength of the coalition would be measured by the quality and efficiency of public services. He also called on Ministers to develop and sustain a close working relationship with all public representatives, including Members of Parliament and Councillors. He elaborated that, as elected representatives, their requests must be attended to with due urgency regardless of their political affiliation.

The President also spoke on the need for greater cooperation between the government and public corporations. Moreover, he called on the Members of the Cabinet to work closely with Board members of companies.
