President Dr Mohamed Waheed has steered the Maldives peacefully through the presidential elections to a successful finale. The country has made a historic move in democratic transition by successfully completing the presidential elections amidst political wrangling, international pressure and scepticism over the government's sincerity.
Outgoing President Waheed has proven the international scepticisms wrong. He is being hailed a champion of democratic transition to be emulated by leaders of other countries going through democratic transition.
The election which was closely contested was won by Abdullah Yamin Abdul Gayoom against former President Nasheed who resigned from his post in February 2012.
