President Dr Mohamed Waheed has welcomed the re-election of Maldives to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for a second consecutive term.

The President also expressed appreciation to the staffs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations, Permanent Mission of the Maldives in Geneva, and other embassies for their work in securing the seat for the Maldives.

The election was held on November 12 at the United Nations General Assembly and the Maldives was re-elected to the UNHRC with 164 votes. The Maldives will commence serving its second consecutive term at the Council, from 2014.

The Maldives was first elected to the Council seat in 2010 and was the smallest member to get elected to the Council.
