Upper South Utilities Limited has signed an agreement with BBM Infra Limited of India to provide electricity to Upper South Province using solar energy.

At a ceremony held at the President’s Office this afternoon, Managing Director Mr Ahmed Saeed Mohamed signed on behalf of Upper South Utilities Limited, while Vice Chairman of BBM Group Narayaana Prasad signed the agreement on behalf of BBM Infra Limited.

Under the agreement BBM Infra Ltd is to establish a 24 mega watt solar power facility to provide electricity to all the islands of Upper South Province.

Speaking at the agreement signing ceremony, Minister of State, Upper South Province Mr Umar Jamal underscored environmental and economic benefits of renewable energy. He further said the government’s decision to make the Maldives carbon neutral gave the determination to move forward with the project.
