President Mohamed Nasheed today met with members of the Judicial Service Commission. The meeting was held this afternoon at the President’s Office.

Discussions at the meeting were mainly on the appointment of a Chief Justice as per Article 147 of the Constitution.

Article 147 states that the President as Head of State shall appoint the Chief Justice, after consulting the Judicial Service Commission and that the appointee should be approved by a majority of the members of the People’s Majlis who are present and voting in that specific session.

The members of the Judicial Service Commission are; Abdulla Shahid, Speaker of the People’s Majlis; Mujthaz Fahumy, a Judge of the Supreme Court elected by the judges of the Supreme Court; Adam Mohamed Abdulla, a Judge of the High Court elected by the judges of the High Court; Abdulla Didi, a Judge of the Trial Courts elected by the judges of the Trial Courts; Afrasheem Ali, a Member of the People’s Majlis appointed by it; Shuaib Abdul Rahman, member of the general public, appointed by the People’s Majlis; Mohamed Latheef, President of the Civil Service Commission; Aishath Velezinee, member appointed by the President; and, Husnu al Suood , Attorney General.
