President Mohamed Nasheed has today met with Chairman of the World Board Ms Margaret Treloar, and Chief Executive Ms Mary McPhail of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. They are visiting the Maldives to attend the 10th Asia-Pacific Regional Conference being held from 4 to 8 July.

Speaking at the meeting, Ms Treloar and Ms McPhail said the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world were committed to promote democracy, human rights, sustainable development, environment and the achievement of the millennium development goals.

They said Maldivian Girl Guides and Girl Scouts could make valuable contributions towards these ends in the Maldives.

President Nasheed also reiterated that the Maldivian Guides and Scouts could play an important role in promoting human rights, democracy, sustainable development and other gender related issues.

Vice President Dr Waheed also attended the meeting. He highlighted the importance of extending Guide and Scout activities beyond schools to broaden their participation in the civil society.
