President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that the although in the past, education sector in the Maldives has mainly focused on making education accessible to all, major reforms to the education sector were now underway in the Maldives. He made the statement while speaking at the ceremony to lay the foundation stone of a new preschool and grade 1-12 school in Hulhumale’.
He said in the past, in order to accommodate more students, there were only double session schools. However, he noted with the current reforms taking place in the education sector, a number of schools across the country have now been made to single session schools.
Speaking in this regard, the President said further reforms were needed to improve the outcomes of education, notably its quality and the overall performance of the sector. He said major advances in providing a more comprehensive, inclusive educational system was now needed – particularly that provides vocational education tied to the growing economy of the country.
President said that the completion of the two schools in Hulhumale’, would ease the overcrowded situation in the schools of Hulhumale’ and provide greater space to conduct academic and non-academic activities for students.
