President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that inviting outside influence into our domestic issues at a time of difference of opinion was highly dangerous, and would lead to the failure of the State. The President made this remark in his address to the nation, on the occasion of the 48th Independence Day of the Maldives. The President said that it was our duty as citizens to uphold the independence and sovereignty of the country at all times.
The President pointed out that in an interdependent world, external and internal independence could only be achieved with economic independence. He said that, the government having to borrow money in order to provide public welfare services would mean that sovereignty might become something that was only written in the Constitution.
In his speech, President Waheed highlighted the measures to be taken in order to strengthen the State, improve it for a more efficient functioning, and make the Maldives a democratic society. The President noted that much reform work was needed, especially in the area of constitutional reform.
In his speech, the President also highlighted the economic improvements the country has made in the last two years.
