President Dr Mohamed Waheed has expressed hope that the number of students going for higher education doubled. He made the statement while speaking at the function to handover student loans to continuing students under the National Student Loan Scheme. The function was held this morning.

The President said improving the standards of colleges and universities was also a priority.

Highlighting the progress the Maldives has made in the area of higher education over a short period of time, President Waheed said in the past two years, the government has facilitated through the government budget, a number of students to pursue higher education.

The President also noted that although the number of students who meet the requirements for higher education was high, only a few students go for higher education. He added that for the country to make further progress that number should increase.

In addition, he said investing in people was necessary for the growth of the economy and to build a happy and prosperous country.

Further, the President urged all students who received the student loans to utilize the given opportunity and strive to achieve good results.
