In his statement on the occasion of World Environment Day, President Dr Mohamed Waheed has stated that despite the political upheavals, great strides have been made in the environmental sector of the country over the past year.

The statement was delivered at the official ceremony held today to mark the World Environment Day,  by the Minister of Environment, Energy and Water, Dr Maryam Shakeela.

Highlighting the theme for this year’s Environment Day celebrations, ‘Think-Eat-Save’, President stated that the campaign was initiated to encourage people to reduce food wastage and to create awareness of its negative implication to the environmental and food safety.

Underscoring that the issue of waste management is the biggest environmental threat facing the country, President underlined the major economic and financial implications in combating the issue.

In this regard, President expressed satisfaction that the efforts to implement the government’s waste management policies are underway.

President also reaffirmed his commitment to remain steadfast in protecting the environment for the next generation.
