President Dr Mohamed Waheed has today inaugurated the Vaikaradhoo Harbour Project. The President visited the island today as part of his current visit to some islands in the South Thiladhummathi Atoll.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President said that it was an offence for those working in the government sector to abstain from taking part in community affairs, or to try and delay developmental projects in the islands. The President said that it would not be damaging to him, but rather would be of great loss to the people.

In his speech, the President noted that the emergence of political parties has divided up the country to a great extent. He said that it has resulted in people being uncooperative towards developmental schemes carried out by a political party they do not support, regardless of how beneficial it may be to the people.

Reflecting on the recent past, the President remarked that developmental projects in some islands have been halted due to the fact that the Island Council either did, or did not belong to a certain political party. The President further assured that his administration was not partial towards anyone, and that it worked to provide the people with all necessary services, as equally and justly as possible. He underlined that those occupying different positions in government institutions, and being paid through the taxpayers’ money, must conduct themselves towards the people in an equitable and unbiased manner.
