President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that we would not be able to live a contented life if we let conflict and resentment to control us. The President made this remark while speaking to the people Maduvvari, as the last stop of his tour of some islands in the Mulaku Atoll.
Speaking in this regard, President said that we need to let go of our personal differences and envious nature, and put forth forgiveness in order to be content with life.
In his speech, the President noted that the introduction of political party system in the Maldives has resulted in defiance becoming common among us, which was not acceptable in other civilized societies. He said that as the Maldives continues in its transition into a full-fledged democracy, we should not let such uncivilized lifestyles to be introduced. He also strongly urged to cease defaming each other publicly.
Highlighting the huge impact of such actions, President Waheed noted that it often lead to conflicts within families. Speaking in this regard, the President said that this disruptive attitude would escalate during elections, and so reminded to be mindful of such issues rising within our families. He called on the people to try as much as possible to maintain good relations, and help each other as much as possible.
The President noted that it was very wrong if a child neglects his father, or if a father neglects his child for political reasons. He said that it was wrong to teach our children unacceptable and immoral habits. Continuing in this regard, the President shared one such personal encounter during his tour of Mulaku Atoll.
“Yesterday as I was coming down from the Mosque after Friday Prayers, I saw a young child with his father. When I went up to them and offered my hand to the kid, the father pulled his hand away. He didn’t let the child shake my hand. I am not the one who is at a loss. I was very saddened by this sight”, said the President.
President Waheed said that when a person acknowledges the other and offers his salutations, preventing the other from returning the greeting was not in line with our Muslim culture. He sadly noted that such habits were still common among us.
In his speech, the President said that we would be able to continue on the road towards development if we maintain peace and harmony among us, and work together as one family. He said that we would not be able to live a contented life if we let conflict and resentment to control us.
