President Nasheed has sent a message of congratulations the President Barack Obama of the United States, on the occasion of his inauguration as the 44th President of the United States. The President’s message reads as follows:

On the historic occasion of your inauguration as the 44th President of the United States, it gives me great pleasure to extend to you warm congratulations and good wishes of the Government and the people of the Maldives and those of my own.
You are assuming office at a time when the world is faced by enormous challenges. Needless to say, the hopes of not only the people of America but also peoples the world over have been raised since your election as President in November last year. In view of these facts and your emphasis on a ‘politics of hope’, the contribution of the United States is ever more crucial for our times. We are delighted that the United States is entering a new era under your leadership and guidance and undoubtedly it would be beneficial for the whole international community.
While expressing my confidence that the friendly relations that exist between our two countries will be further enhanced in the coming years, may I also convey my best wishes for your good health and well-being, as well as for the continued progress and prosperity of the people of the United States.
