Speaking at a function to mark Australia Day, President Mohamed Nasheed has lauded relations with Australia. The function was held last evening at Holiday Inn Hotel.

Noting Australian assistance to the Maldives, President Nasheed thanked the government and the people of Australia.

In his statement, President Nasheed also commended Prime Minister Kevin Rudd of Australia.

Describing the Prime Minister as an “extremely capable person”, President Nasheed said the Prime Minister was “instrumental in coming up with the Copenhagen Accord”.

Australian High Commissioner to the Maldives Kathy Klugman also spoke at the function. She noted the close bilateral relations that exist between the Maldives and Australia.

Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed and his spouse Madam Ilham Hussain as well as some senior officials of the government attended the function.
