President Mohamed Nasheed has been named the ‘Best International Politician’ by UK’s The Independent newspaper in its selections for Green Awards.

In a citation The Independent stated that since Copenhagen climate summit, “there has been a regression into denialism across the world”, and “a handful of politicians will be remembered for trying to do the right thing” for climate change.

“The most inspiring leader was Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives. He has bled and nearly died for his island nation,” columnist Johann Hari wrote for The Independent.

President Nasheed’s plan to make the Maldives a carbon-neutral country within a decade, and last year’s underwater cabinet meeting to alert the world to the climate crisis were noted in the article.

Fourteen different categories were chosen for the Green Awards, which “celebrate those doing most to protect our fragile environment”.
