President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has sent Eid al-Fitr greetings to all Maldivians this evening in a written statement, in which he emphasized a message of unity and inclusivity. The President remarked that whilst social distancing measures remain necessary due to COVID-19, it is still possible to honour the festive spirit of Eid through the use of modern technology, and urged all Maldivians to reach out to their friends and family, in order to celebrate this joyous occasion with them.

President Solih acknowledged that some individuals and families feel despondent and vulnerable due to the ongoing battle against COVID-19. He remarked that now is an especially appropriate time to reach out and help those in need, noting that the essence of Eid al-Fitr lies in generosity, kindness and empathy.

The President further stated that as we remain inside the safety of our homes to protect ourselves from this pandemic, we should practice the values of Islam. This includes stoicism in the face of adversity; kindness towards children; and caring for our parents and elders. He said that it is important to spend meaningful time with loved ones to counteract the negative effects the extended lockdown may have on one’s mental well-being.

Concluding his statement, President Solih urged all Maldivians to contemplate on the lessons learned during this Ramazan and to remain united in the face of the ongoing pandemic.
