President Mohamed Nasheed has met with and congratulated Mr Abdulla Shahid, the new Speaker, and, Mr Ahmed Nazim, the new Deputy Speaker, of the People’s Majlis.
Stressing that the new Constitution was adopted through the hard work of many people, the President noted that the new People’s Majlis was the first Majlis to be elected under this new Constitution.
The President said the duties of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker were very important and expressed his confidence that they would carry out their work smoothly and fairly. He assured that the government would extend its full cooperation to the Majlis.
At the meeting, the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Mr Abdulla Shahid, said that he would consult all members of the People’s Majlis individually and collectively with all political parties in fulfilling his duties. Further, he said that he would cooperate with the government in implementing policies that are of national interest.
Deputy Speaker, Mr Ahmed Nazim, said that the cooperation of all members were crucial for the smooth functioning of the Majlis.
The President was joined at the meeting by Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed.
