President Mohamed Nasheed this afternoon ratified a Bill on Judges, which was passed by the People's Majlis on Tuesday morning.

The Act on Judges deals with the main principles concerning judges in the country, including the powers and responsibilities that judges hold, rules on judges' ethical standards, rules on the appointment and dismissal of judges and judges' salaries and allowances.

The Act on Judges is one of the key pieces of legislation needed to create a legitimate and fully functioning judiciary in the country.

"We are very pleased that political parties put aside their differences and passed this crucial law," said Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair.

"This law goes a long way to filling the constitutional void the country has been in since Sunday."

"I urge Members of the Majlis to also approve the President's nominations for the Chief Justice and bench of the Supreme Court, so we can create the fully functioning and independent legal system the Maldives' young democracy deserves," Zuhair added.

According to the Act on Judges, all judges shall be independent from all authorities and influence, and subject only to the Constitution and the law.

Unless stated otherwise in a law or the Constitution, Judges shall be appointed without term, until the age of retirement.
